As a vet tech I see a fair share of pets that do not have pet insurance. I also see a fair share of clients that find it hard to afford veterinary care, especially in emergency situations. So how would pet insurance help in a routine situation or even an emergency? Well for one thing, pet insurance could cover a majority of the cost of treatment, whether routine wellness screening or emergency medicine. I think that pet insurance also allows for better decision making when looking at an expensive treatment plan. When you know that a certain amount of the bill is going to be covered it makes it much easier to decide on the treatment option that will best serve your pet. I think there are several areas that need to be considered when thinking about purchasing pet insurance.
1. What is covered?
For me the most important aspect of pet insurance is what is actually covered. I think it’s very important when researching pet insurance to make sure you know exactly what the plan will cover. Maybe your dog or cat likes to chew and swallow toys. In that case it would be a good idea to make sure that the insurance covers the possibility of emergency abdominal surgery! Or maybe the sweet little french bulldog puppy you just purchased has hip problems… so looking into genetic coverage should be a must. Just try to keep in mind the different areas that you feel you will need coverage for based on your individual pet.
2. How much is the pet insurance?
You should always keep in mind the cost vs. what you may get out of the pet insurance. You should never choose a plan that isn’t affordable within your budget. The monthly cost of pet insurance can vary greatly on the type of coverage you select, anywhere from under $20 to over $100 per month.
3. What is the reimbursement procedure?
If you end up with a large vet bill, when will your pet insurance reimburse you? Unfortunately at this point pet insurance companies do not pay any of the costs of the bill up front. So it is important that you know exactly how long the reimbursement process will take. With a large bill a week or two difference in the reimbursement could be a huge difference maker. So make sure you know exactly when you will be reimbursed.
4. What is the pet insurance companies reputation?
Make sure that you have a good understanding of the history of the pet insurance company. The pet insurance field is becoming very competitive right now, so there are many good companies on the rise. But it is important to remember that there are also those that are high quality/upstanding companies. Make sure you research, research, research!
